Trichomonas vaginalis

STD, molecular diagnostics

A vaginal Trichomonas infection (Trichomoniasis) is a frequently occurring STD. Typical complaints with Trichomonas vaginalis are:

  • vaginal discharge: smelly secretion that can be greenish in colour and sometimes frothy;
  • burning sensation and irritation;
  • burning sensation when urinating;
  • pain during sex.

Sometimes the diagnosis can be made on the basis of the past medical history and the physical examination. If desired, Eurofins | NMDL-LCPL can perform (supplementary) testing by PCR for Trichomonas vaginalis.

How do you send in the sample?

Examination for Trichomonas vaginalis can be done by sending in a vaginal swab and urine. You fix the swab or urine in the Cobas tube and send it to us by post. You will receive the result within five working days. For STD diagnoses we follow the multidisciplinary guideline of the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Dermatologie en Venereologie (NVDV - Dutch Society for Dermatology and Venereology) and the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Medische Microbiologie (NVMM - Dutch Society for Medical Microbiology).
