Treponema pallidum is a bacterium that can cause syphilis in both men and women. If a Treponema pallidum infection is suspected due to the presence of an anogenital ulcer (hard chancre), Eurofins | NMDL-LCPL can confirm or exclude this for you. This is done with the aid of PCR, which enables a primary infection with Treponema pallidum to be detected in a sensitive and reproducible manner.
For more information, contact us or consult the Dutch College of General Practitioners´ STD decision tree here.
This method is not suitable for detecting secondary or tertiary syphilis. In those cases, antibodies against Treponema pallidum must be identified in the patient´s blood serum. Eurofins | NMDL-LCPL can perform that test for you in consultation.
Examination for Treponema pallidum differs between men and women. For a man the examination can be done by sending in a swab. For a woman the examination can be done by sending in a vaginal swab. You fix this swab in the Cobas tube and send it to us by post. You will receive the result within 5 working days. For STD diagnoses we follow the multidisciplinary guideline of the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Dermatologie en Venereologie (NVDV - Dutch Society for Dermatology and Venereology) and the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Medische Microbiologie (NVMM - Dutch Society for Medical Microbiology).
