Candida albicans

Fungus, molecular diagnostics

Vaginal Candida infections are very common. This infection can cause bothersome complaints, such as:

  • Vaginal discharge: milk-coloured, creamy and/or simply watery secretion
  • itching
  • burning sensation
  • irritation
  • swollen labia
  • small cracks in the skin around the inner labia
  • burning sensation when urinating
  • pain during sex

Normally the diagnosis can be made on the basis of the past medical history and the physical examination, but sometimes a differential diagnosis is necessary. In particular there might be bacterial vaginosis or Trichomonas vaginalis. Eurofins | NMDL-LCPL can do this examination for you.

How do you send in the sample?

Examination for Candida albicans can be done by sending in a vaginal swab. You fix the swab in the Cobas tube and send it to us by post. You will receive a reliable result within five working days. For this diagnosis we follow the multidisciplinary guideline of the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Dermatologie en Venereologie (NVDV - Dutch Society for Dermatology and Venereology) and the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Medische Microbiologie (NVMM - Dutch Society for Medical Microbiology).
