Bacterial vaginosis

BV, molecular diagnostics

Bacterial vaginosis can be very unpleasant for your patient. For this reason it is important that it can be treated quickly. A good past medical history, physical and supplementary examination is essential for diagnosing Bacterial vaginosis. Bacterial vaginosis is characterised by:

  • change in the secretion (vaginal discharge);
  • a strong odour;
  • acidity (pH) of the vaginal discharge higher than 4.5;
  • presence of ´clue cells´: these cells overgrown with Gardnerella are a very strong indication for the presence of bacterial vaginosis.

How do you send in the sample?

Examination for bacterial vaginosis can be done by sending in a vaginal swab. You fix the swab in the Cobas tube and send it to us by post. You will receive the result within five working days. For this diagnosis we follow the multidisciplinary guideline of the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Dermatologie en Venereologie (NVDV - Dutch Society for Dermatology and Venereology) and the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Medische Microbiologie (NVMM - Dutch Society for Medical Microbiology).
